Google+ Bug Exposed Data of 500,000 Users

And an internal memo noted that while there wasn't any evidence of misuse on behalf of developers, there wasn't a way to know for sure whether any misuse took place. Also the software giant also mentioned that they are no proof whether this bug in the Google+ software was known by any outside developer. The company detected a bug in Google Plus's People APIs which granted permission for apps to access the static data from user's profiles with private marks on it. However, we ran a detailed analysis over the two weeks prior to patching the bug, and from that analysis, the Profiles of up to 500,000 Google+ accounts were potentially affected. It did not include phone numbers, the content of emails or messages, or other kinds of communication data. A spokeswoman for Google didn't immediately return a request for further comment.

After the news broke, Google announced in a blog post that it had closed down the social networking service for consumers.

Unfortunately, whether you've forgotten about it or not, if you have a Google+ account, your data may have been put at risk.

The company added that it made a decision to sunset the consumer version of Google+ due to the significant challenges in creating and maintaining it and its very low usage.

Google has admitted that adoption of the its social network and subsequent user engagement has been low, with 90% of Google+ user sessions lasting for less than five seconds.

Up to 438 applications may have used the API. Regarding the shutdown, Google says, "The review did highlight the significant challenges in creating and maintaining a successful Google+ that meets consumers' expectations". Google says Google+ for consumers will wind down over a 10-month period, which would be complete by the end of next August.

However, Google will continue to use Google+ for Enterprise purposes as an internal social network for companies rather than for consumers, saying that it is the most popular use of the social network.

The API flaw allowed third-party app developers to access profile and contact information that chose to sign into the apps via Google.
