Brees exited the game at the two-minute warning in the fourth quarter.
Brees hit rookie Tre'Quan Smith with a 62-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter against Washington to break Peyton Manning's previous record of 71,940 yards. Brees removed his helmet, held out his arm to salute the crowd and hugged his wife, Brittany, and children on the sideline.
Brees came into Monday already in possession of several other National Football League career passing records, including most completions (6,344), highest completion percentage (67.1), most passing yards per game (283.6), most consecutive 4,000-yard passing seasons (12), most consecutive games with a touchdown pass (54) and most consecutive games with at least 20 completions (57). To save time, he also congratulates Brees for passing the all-time touchdown record at a future point. His family joined him on the field, and TV cameras even caught a few fans shedding tears.
The game continued after with the Saints unsuccessfully attempted a two-point conversion - with Brees notably split out as a receiver, at least in theory, while backup quarterback Taysom Hill took the snap and tried to run into the end zone.
Saints officials said Brees also would hand his uniform over to the Hall of Fame after the game.
The game featured other touches meant to honor Brees.
Dustin Hopkins kicked field goals of 37 and 53 yards for Washington, which also had a 4-yard touchdown run from Alex Smith to pull within 26-13 at half-time.
You just knew the man was going to do it in style.
Then he gets serious and congratulates Brees for real. You've ruined that for me.
"It's great to have him back", Payton said, stressing the Ingram's presence reduces the physical toll on fellow running back Alvin Kamara.
