And Jodie admits it's "depressing" that Doctor Who has only become a woman in 2018. "You know this not a goal break for the show, this is absolutely within the rules and the law of this extraordinary series".

Anyone who has been watching the long-running BBC series over the past few years should not find a female Time Lord surprising.

If this premiere showed us anything, it is that Chibnall and Whittaker's Doctor Who is going to be episode after episode where we are all emotionally reminded that we are important-and that someone out there wants to be with us.

Alongside Whittaker's own debut, Chris Chibnall (Broadchurch) now serves as Doctor Who's showrunner, while Tosin Cole, Mandip Gill and Bradley Walsh play the Doctor's three companions, whose backstories were established in the season opener. So I felt as if I was continually trying to discover things and I suppose settle in.

But Epzo (who is played by guest star Shaun Dooley) has other plans, as he snarls back at her 'Yea, well maybe I don't play by the rules'. But perhaps more important is how much fun she is having with it. Fans of the reboot have thus far been robbed of this experience, and I hope that we can expect more ludicrous finales as the weeks roll by.

"As for her accent, guess we'll be adding in the subtitles". The Doctor Who Barbie can be purchased for $49.99 from Barbie.com and other outlets.

It feels much more like a Russell T Davies episode than one from the cluttered, convoluted Steven Moffat era.

But this isn't the first time that Americans have been stumped by Whittaker's native accent.

"If you've never seen the show before, this is a great season to start with". They're off kilter, walking on baby legs as they discover the new aspects of themselves.

Doctor Who will be available on ABC iView on Mondays at 5.45am AEDT, from October 8, immediately after the United Kingdom broadcast.
