Those who wonder why Danny Welbeck is picked for England squads may like to study his performance last night. Meanwhile, Mesut Ozil and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang have been rested completely by Emery.

The Gunners will welcome fourth-placed Watford to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday knowing that a win would hoist them above the Hornets.

Upon the resumption of the second-half, the hosts went a goal down as Alan Judge pulled one back for the Championship side in the 58th minute. "He gives us his quality and commitment every day", the Arsenal boss told his post-match press conference.

Emery said, "I am very happy individually with the player".

"Like on Sunday, for example, after Sokratis' injury it was important how Rob played and helped the team to find the performance to win against Everton".

However, it was a more experienced head who proved to be the difference between the sides in the first half as Danny Welbeck grabbed two goals to give the Gunners the advantage at the break.

The 27-year-old only played 11 minutes as England reached the semi-finals in Russian Federation, but it prevented him hitting the ground running under new Gunners boss Unai Emery on his return to the club.

He continued: "There are three things when we are speaking about an individual".

"It's not often the players get the chance to test themselves against one of the top teams in the country".

"A few of the lads had a bit more of a pre-season than me which made it a bit hard, I came back a bit later than the others".
