Rumours about Elba being next in line for the role after Daniel Craig holsters his gun and leaves the franchise for good next year have been swirling since 2014.

A pair of Elba's recent Twitter posts have fueled speculation that the actor will be the next Bond with Elba both teasing and then downplaying the speculation.

In it, director Antoine Fuqua says that Bond producer Barbara Broccoli believes it's time to bring some diversity to the role and has left the door open for Elba to potentially succeed the current 007, Daniel Craig.

"My name's Elba, Idris Elba", he captioned a selfie, referencing the character's signature introduction, "Bond, James Bond".

"Idris could do it if he was in shape".

Idris Elba as James Bond is a rumour that's been around for years, nearly as long as that one about Quentin Tarantino directing a "Star Trek" movie. You need a guy with a physically strong presence. "[He] has that", she reportedly said. "I mean what do we have to do here?"

Elba, 45, made his name in gritty United States television drugs drama "The Wire" and won a Golden Globe for his role as a murder detective in "Luther", before moving to the big screen. We have to wear handsome suits, drive nice cars, chase bad guys and date lovely women? Only time will tell, but we're hoping the hype is real.
