The transfer window in England closes on 9 August, a day before United begin their Premier League campaign against Leicester City. The German has pretty much seen it all in his career already, but was reportedly looking for a new challenge - and United seemed very interested.

A number of United's U-23 squad could make temporary exits, with European leagues remaining open for business and English Football League clubs allowed to make loan signings until the end of the month.

Last season's Premier League runners-up have stuttered in the market this summer, having so far only signed Brazil midfielder Fred, promising full-back Diogo Dalot and third-choice goalkeeper Lee Grant.

Following Bayern's narrow 1-0 pre-season friendly victory over United at the Allianz Arena, Boateng admitted to Mourinho that he would not move to Old Trafford. Having won the World Cup with France in Russian Federation, the midfielder wants his wages to rise to £350,000-a-week from his existing £150,000-a-week.

"But it will take more than a quality defender to galvanise them". The 29-year old Germany worldwide has been at the 28-times German champions since joining from Manchester City in 2011.

"For me Jerome is one of the best central defenders in the world", the Dutch winger said, according to FourFourTwo. The Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper has written about growing tensions between the player and club. Boateng has turned down the advances of the Red Devils as he is eager to remain at Bayern Munich. Since 2016, Boateng has been sidelined with muscle injuries on several occasions.

The player stressed that the accusations were a great disappointment to him. Some reports suggested he and other players had become complacent, and that a new impulse was needed.
