Palestinian mourners carry the body of 21-year-old volunteer medic Abdullah al-Qatati, who was shot the day before while trying to help wounded protesters at the border between Gaza and the Israeli-occupied territories, during his funeral in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip on August 11, 2018.

It said 200 Palestinians were on the boats but that no one was hurt in the incident.

Speaking in a panel discussion on Israel's i24NEWS (video above), Klein reminded viewers about Israel's 2005 withdrawal from Gaza, which he argued paved the way for Hamas's takeover and the use of the coastal enclave to attack Israel.

But an unofficial ceasefire agreement between the two foes went into effect around midnight (2100 GMT) on Thursday.

Two Palestinians died during protests that continued after a peace deal was reached between Israel and Hamas to stop fighting in the area.

Israel's military says its forces have struck a Hamas position in Gaza after Palestinians rallying at the Gaza border threw a grenade and explosive devices at troops stationed there.

Qatati is at least the second medic to have been killed by Israeli fire during months of border protests.

Thursday had seen extensive Israeli raids in retaliation for the launching of more than 180 rockets and mortar rounds by Hamas and its allies on Wednesday night.

It would be the third such truce in a month.

"We are closer to an arrangement than we have been in the past because Hamas's interest in a deal is greater than its wish for escalation", he said.

Earlier on Friday, Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri celebrated Hamas's supposed achievements during the latest flare-up of conflict, saying it "proves Israel can be defeated".

"He was the only one who demanded to launch a large-scale operation in the Gaza Strip".

The resolution called on UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to make proposals within 60 days "on ways and means for ensuring the safety, protection, and well-being of the Palestinian civilian population under Israeli occupation", including "recommendations regarding an global protection mechanism".

"Yet their ability to avoid renewed war is becoming increasingly constrained with each cycle of violence", Lovatt added.

They are calling for an end to the decade-long Israeli blockade of Gaza and the return of Palestinian refugees to their ancestral homes inside Israel, which they fled or were expelled from during the war surrounding Israel's creation in 1948.

It says any significant return of refugees would mean the end of it as a Jewish state.

307 other Palestinians were reported wounded, more or less all at the protest.

He said another 25 Palestinians were hit by Israeli fire, with one in critical condition after being shot in the head.
