Manchester United have opened talks with Chelsea over a surprise swoop for Kurt Zouma as they look to try and sign a centre-back on deadline day, according to L'Equipe.

Manchester United were earlier linked with the likes of Harry Maguire, Toby Alderweireld and even Yerry Mina but failed in their pursuit of all three players.

Zouma arrived at Chelsea in 2014, with a lot of excitement around his talent. Manchester United need a defensive upgrade on the likes of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones and Zouma is certainly that.

Usually in cases such as this clubs can approach the Premier League and request more time to complete the deal, if they can provide all the necessary paperwork and prove that the completing the deal is just a matter of dotting i's and crossing t's.

The French worldwide spent last season out on loan at Stoke City but couldn't prevent them from being relegated from the Premier League and he's now facing an uncertain future back at Chelsea under Maurizio Sarri.

L'Equipe are an extremely reliable source, and the fact that they are reporting this indicates the deal is close to completion.

Set to don the red of Manchester United?

The Mirror believe Everton submitted a deal sheet that could go allow them to sign the France worldwide, despite the deal going beyond the 5pm deadline for Premier League clubs.
