A new report from college football insider Brett McMurphy has revealed some of the details of the contracts/raises now-fired assistant coach Zach Smith received during his time at Ohio State under Urban Meyer. "Urban Meyer is on the hot seat and can be wrongfully fired from Ohio State", the petition states, adding, "it is up to us Buckeye Nation to help him not just for him but for THE Ohio State University and the great state of Ohio!"
The first half hour of the Buckeyes' fourth practice was open for observation and photography, with acting coach Ryan Day staying at the far end of the field working with quarterbacks. He denied any wrongdoing and was never charged. Ohio State announced on Sunday night that the investigation is expected to be completed in two weeks.
One of the rally's attendees was Stacy Elliot, the father of former OSU player and current Dallas Cowboy Ezekiel Elliott.
"He handled the situation to way his job required him to", Elliott said.
Meyer initially told reporters at Big Ten Media Days on July 25 that he didn't know anything about abuse allegations made by Zach Smith's ex-wife Courtney in October 2015.
After Courtney Smith went public last week, claiming she had told Meyer's wife Shelley about the abuse in 2015, the Buckeyes head coach changed his story in a statement. He insisted that he has "always followed proper reporting protocols and procedures" by "elevating the issues to the proper channels" whenever he has "learned of an incident involving a student-athlete, coach or member of our staff". He also admitted lying to reporters about it.
Zach Smith told Columbus radio station 105.7 The Zone that Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith questioned him during the 2015 football season about the allegations made by Courtney Smith that fall.
'Ms. Smith is cautiously optimistic that The Ohio State University's investigative committee will determine if proper reporting protocol was followed upon learning of the ongoing, abuse allegations against Zach Smith, ' Leveridge said in the statement.
