Cases of the West Nile virus have also been reported in 2018 in Hungary, Italy, Romania, and Serbia, according to data from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
Brenda Miller is the manager of health protection and investigation with Region of Waterloo Public Health and said the region monitors 16 different sites for West Nile virus in recreational and residential areas.
Health experts say that they expect the incidence rate to only keep increasing as the scorching heat drags on, and are encouraging the public to protect themselves.
Symptoms include severe headaches, fever, vomiting and diarrhea, with the agency recommending to seek immediate medical attention.
"It's a good reminder this is the time of year that we have to be concerned about West Nile regardless of where the traps are and really take precautions for ourselves". Less than one per cent develop more serious central nervous system issues, she said.
Health officials say the virus has been detected in 169 mosquito samples from across the state.
Troy urges its residents to be proactive with preventative measures and avoiding mosquito bites by wearing long sleeves, using insect repellents and preventing babies and younger children from coming in contact with mosquitos.
