Paul Manafort trial day 8: Prosecutors expect to wrap up case soon

In December 2016, Manafort sent an "urgent" email to Gates including Calk and Calk's son on a list of people Manafort wanted to receive invitations to Trump's inauguration.

Both Gates and Manafort were indicted last October by a federal grand jury on 12 charges, including conspiracy against the U.S. Manafort has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

On Wednesday, Ellis reportedly scolded prosecutors in front of jurors over Welch's presence in the courtroom, saying he doesn't allow witnesses to watch trials.

In its cross-examination of Magionos, the defense presented pieces of evidence with Manafort's signature on them, calling into question whether Manafort had actually written his signature on the foreign accounts. And the fact that after loaning Manafort millions of dollars Calk became an economic adviser to Trump casts doubt on Trump's famous pledge to "drain the swamp" and puncture the rampant influence peddling in Washington. The firm's director was known to Manafort and Gates as "Doctor K". "You and I were talking during the break--the jury can't be happy with this judge because of the snide, snarky comments".

U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III has been pushing prosecutors to hurry through their case.

As he has repeatedly noted, President Donald Trump is not directly implicated in Paul Manafort's Virginia trial. Gates said it did.

At times, Ellis has crossed lines, Litman said.

In all, the pair of authoritative money trackers explained just how large Manafort's alleged foreign bank-account scheme was and how much he's accused of siphoning secretly into luxe purchases.

When it was his turn to question Gates, defense attorney Kevin Downing went on the offensive, pressing him on what amount of time he would have expected to face in prison had he not agreed to cooperate with the government. Some of the jurors respond loudly, "Yes, judge" or "Yes, your honor".

Prosecutors also say the men falsified documents to lie to banks in order to qualify Manafort for loans. "Right now, it seems clear that it's the prosecution that should be specifically requesting that instruction from the judge in advance, as Judge Ellis has had some unusually cutting words for the prosecutors in this case".

The jury was reminded of the universe of vendors who've testified - the high-end suit sellers, the landscaper, the friend-turned-real-estate-agent, the general contractor - as the Federal Bureau of Investigation and IRS representatives walked through money flowing into their legitimate businesses from Manafort's foreign accounts. Gates has already pled guilty to two counts in Mueller's probe and testified against Manafort as part of a plea deal with the special counsel's office.

Paul Manafort recommended Stephen Calk, a Chicago banker involved in approving a loan at the center of Manafort's financial fraud trial, as secretary of the Army, according to testimony Tuesday from star witness Rick Gates.

Greg Andres, an attorney with special counsel Robert Mueller's office, said the prosecution is running ahead of schedule. He also admitted to embezzling "several hundred thousand" dollars from Manafort including funds used to finance a London apartment to engage in an extra-marital affair. And he lied to special counsel investigators after striking a plea agreement with them.

On Tuesday, Downing asked how the jury could believe Gates "after all the lies you told and fraud you committed".

"Generally, when a person's testimony is corroborated by objective evidence - whether that be a recording, a document, or something else - it makes it hard to attack that by just attacking the witness's credibility", a former USA attorney with experience prosecuting similar fraud cases said.
