Medfield's Uzo Aduba has been nominated for Supporting Actress for "Orange Is the New Black" three times (winning twice, in 2014 and 2015), while Wayland and West Roxbury's Taylor Schilling was nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2014.

The newbie comedies aced out long-time Emmy favorite "Modern Family", a five-time victor and perennial nominee since it debuted in 2009 on ABC. NBC shows earned 78 nods. "This is the most diverse class of performer nominees we've had - we're nearly up to a third, which is fantastic", Maury McIntyre, TV academy president.

Several major stars not normally associated with television got their first Emmy nominations in 2018. Dinklage has been nominated in this category for every single season of Game of Thrones (he's won twice, for her work on seasons 1 and 5), bringing his grand total of nods to seven.

The show about noble families vying for the Iron Throne faces tough competition from perennial favorite comedy sketch show Saturday Night Live and HBO stablemate Westworld with 21 nominations each. Saturday Night Live's "Weekend Update" co-anchors Michael Che and Colin Jost will tag team as hosts. Legend's nomination for Jesus Christ, Superstar means he can add an Emmy to the Grammy, Oscar and Tony he already has on his shelf.

While other streaming services didn't do as well as Netflix did, Hulu was nominated for 27 awards, and Amazon Prime was right behind them at 22 - most of which are from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Although it's up for top series honours, it drew only three supporting actor bids for cast members Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage.

NBC's "This Is Us", the show about a multicultural family that premiered to huge critical acclaim previous year, received its second nomination for drama series. Other nominees in the category include Jason Bateman ("Ozark"), Ed Harris ("Westworld") and Matthew Rhys ("The Americans").

Samantha Bee's nomination in the variety talk series category for her TBS show "Full Frontal" is likely to be interpreted as a gesture of support from Hollywood after she was upbraided for using a taboo curse word to describe Ivanka Trump.

Glover and Anderson's competitors for best comedy series actor are Ted Danson for "The Good Place", Larry David for "Curb Your Enthusiasm", William H. Macy for "Shameless" and Bill Hader for "Barry".
