Barack Obama lost over 2 million followers from his previous 103.63 million, leaving him at 101 million, while President Donald Trump lost 340,000 followers, taking him from 53.4 million to 53.1 million.

Twitter Inc.'s top executive didn't slide by unscathed in the social-media site's crackdown on fake followers.

The Washington Post reported last week that Twitter has suspended more than one million accounts a day in recent months, and the rate has more than doubled since October, when the company, under congressional pressure, revealed how Russians used fake accounts to manipulate the USA presidential election.

Twitter argued that the recent move was aimed at building users' confidence and reflected the fact that follower counts are "a visible feature" on the platform. Twitter locks accounts when they display a sudden change of behaviour, like sending lots of unsolicited replies.

Popular Twitter users who have branded themselves as influencers have lost countless followers in the wake of the new regulations to curb fake accounts.
