'I Am One Of The Best Defenders In The World!'

Dejan Lovren has now reached the Champions League and World Cup final just a couple of months apart but he's getting a bit carried away with himself.

Lovren's Croatia team defeated England in Wednesday's World Cup semi-final to take their place in the Moscow showpiece against France.

Having seen off Argentina, Uruguay and Belgium in 90 minutes and had an extra day's rest following their semi-final on Tuesday, France will be heavy favourites to make amends for defeat to Portugal on home soil in the final of Euro 2016 on Sunday.

Lovren, however, managed to regain Jurgen Klopp's confidence and the German coach used him in 29 Premier League matches, while the Croatian didn't miss a single game in Liverpool's way to the Champions League final. A year before that, a swastika was drawn on the field before a national-team game.

Lovren will hope beyond this, that this carries into next season too and gives him a mental edge over the Tottenham striker when they meet Liverpool.

"It's something we'll never forget. We showed our character, we showed that we deserved to be in the final and people should respect us", he said. People now will never forget us. We have good mothers and fathers.

"It was quite tough first half, we couldn't control the ball and they had some chances, but in the second half we did much better".

"Modric is not one of the best, [he is] the best midfield player in the world and if we win this World Cup he deserves the Ballon d'Or".

They had previously defeated Denmark and hosts Russian Federation on penalties, becoming the first team ever to advance to the final by winning three consecutive extra time games.

Those episodes have led to sanctions from soccer's worldwide governing body, but Lovren is hoping the squad's success at this World Cup will mark a turning point for the country.
