The AKP failed to win a majority in legislative elections and will need support from its allies in the right-wing Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) which could push it into more hardline policies.

With more than 900,000 active personnel, Turkey has the second largest force in North Atlantic Treaty Organisation after the United States which has nearly 1.5 million.


The lira erased earlier gains after the decree was published and was trading 0.2 per cent lower at 4.58 per dollar at 5:24 p.m.in Istanbul.
