He almost managed it - a booming drive and delicate approach left Fox needing to hole an eight-footer to win his first title on the European Tour, but past the right edge it skimmed, leaving Fox stunned, and giving Knox a second chance as the pair returned to the 18th hole for a playoff.

And when the players returned to the 18th for a sudden-death play-off the situation was remarkably repeated, Knox holing from an nearly identical place for birdie before Fox saw his attempt catch the edge of the hole and spin out.

"Tough to describe how fantastic this feels", he said.

The 32 year old holed an 18-footer on the first, added another birdie on the next and then put his second to eight feet on the fourth to set up an eagle. I wasn't really aiming, I was just sort of reacting to the line.

"Had one putt been an inch either way I'd still be out there now or even with the trophy in my hand but well done to Russ, he played some great golf today". Making two of them from nearly identical positions.

On the winning putt in sudden death, he added: "I said to (caddie) James, "well, we've already made this putt".

"I'm just lucky to win one of these massive events, so thank you very much to Rolex".

"I thought my chances had slipped on 17 to be honest, failing to make birdie", Knox said.

"Obviously I needed a stretch like this", said Knox regarding his hopes of making Thomas Bjorn's team.

The Scot finished tied second last week in the French Open at Le Golf National - the course that will host the Ryder Cup in September. It's a great start with this win and last week as well.

Asked if he felt capable now of going on to win The Open, he said: "I do actually". I'm not being greedy right now but you never know.

This weekend the action moves to the Scottish Open at Gullane. "Might as well go try and win there".

Fox, who had a 68, secured a place in the British Open at Carnoustie, Scotland, later this month.

"He also sent me a couple of videos of my body language after all the missed putts this week", laughed the four-time major victor.

"But I was able to hit a good shot and get on the green, which I was thrilled with".
