Megan Brainard, Zsa Zsa's owner, told TODAY that the dog was found dead by a relative early Tuesday morning.

Zsa Zsa - who's namesake is Zsa Zsa Gabor - had entered the World's Ugliest Dog competition before, but 2018 was her year. Zsa Zsa's nine fruitful years were forged in hardship - she spent her first five years in a puppy mill, before finding her family by way of a nonprofit.

Zsa Zsa's 15 minutes in the limelight are over: the copiously drooling English bulldog named the World's Ugliest Dog just weeks ago has died. "I'm in shock still", she told CNN sister network HLN.

One June 23, Zsa Zsa - with her barrel chest, slobbering tongue and a pink manicure - won the 30th annual World's Ugliest Dog contest in California. She called Zsa Zsa's passing "devastating". She said her family held a small memorial for the pooch, known to love Slim Jims and burritos from the Mexican fast-food chain Chipotle. "We were all saying our goodbyes". The hound was in good health and had been staying with Brainard's father, who woke up Tuesday to find she had passed, she said.

"From the moment we saw her lovely face, we knew we would be her forever home", Brainard said at the time. "She never really showed much excitement but yes, she was definitely living it up after she won".

"She knew she was special".
