Greg Risling, spokesman for the District Attorney's office, said that case was brought forward by the city of Santa Monica, Reuters reported.

A Santa Monica Police Department spokesman did not immediately return messages seeking additional details about the referral. The first involves the rape allegation from 1990, and a source close to the investigation said that this is the case being reviewed by prosecutors. Late previous year, Marty Singer, Stallone's attorney, said his client "categorically disputes" the accusation and added that the woman filed the report to get media attention. A criminal allegation dating to the 1990s can not be charged under California law because it is past the statute of limitations that existed at the time.

The allegation against the star comes in the wake of the #MeToo movement that has focused attention on sexual harassment in Hollywood and beyond.

A woman claimed the action hero raped her decades ago and she filed a police report with the allegations in November.
