Harvey Weinstein pleads not guilty to rape charge in court

Illuzzi, the top prosecutor handling Weinstein's criminal case, agreed there was no issue at hand and said the emails between Thompson and Spiro would be protected under attorney-client privilege.

This won't be the first film of De Palma's set during a film festival - 2002's Femme Fatale took place at Cannes - and TIFF has celebrated De Palma in the past, particularly during a career retrospective of the director back in 2016.

Dozens more women have accused him of sexual misconduct, ranging from harassment to assault.

Weinstein will be in court September 20 for the next major pretrial hearing.

After leaving a court in Manhattan, New York, on Tuesday, his lawyer, Ben Brafman, told reporters that the case was "imminently defensible" based on what they had learned about the evidence.

Vance Jr. said that the grand jury presented charges of rape in the first and third degrees, along with a criminal sexual act in the first degree. More than 80 women have come forward to accuse the disgraced movie producer of various forms of sexual assault.

The accusation of forced oral sex comes from Lucia Evans, a marketing consultant who, in 2004, was an aspiring actress.

Allegations against Weinstein helped spark the #MeToo and #TimesUp movements.

"As awful as the crime of rape is, it is equally reprehensible to be falsely accused", Brafman said.

Several men have been professionally toppled by such accounts, including former New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who had been in the middle of prosecuting the case against Weinstein, when he stepped down last month after accusations of physical and sexual abuse by several women. He's free on $1 million bail. The device monitors his location 24 hours a day, and restricts him to only travel in NY state and CT.

Brafman says he wants to separate the charges against Weinstein and have separate trials, because the alleged incidents happened eight to 10 years apart.

He is also under criminal investigation in London and Los Angeles, but the criminal charges in NY were the first to be lodged.

Following public revelations past year about his predatory behaviour, Thompson said she was referred to Brafman and another attorney at his firm, Alex Spiro.

"Melissa did not learn that Brafman was actually then or would later be Weinstein's lead criminal defence attorney until after turning over the video as evidence".
