The Candlelight Vigil is one of many commemorative events taking place in the nation's capital during National Police Week 2018.

The ceremony is a prelude to National Police Week, which runs from Sunday through Saturday, May 19, the week encompassing National Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15, a day established by Pres. John F. Kennedy in 1962.

On May 15 each year, the Fraternal Order of Police and the Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary host a ceremony on the west steps of the U.S. Capitol to honor fallen law enforcement officers and their families.
