The announcement of the match between the newly-crowned Premier Soccer League champions Sundowns and new La Liga champions Barcelona was made by Downs president Patrice Motsepe.
The game presents a wonderful opportunity for South African supporters of Barça, and is being organised by the South African Football Association together with LaLiga World Challenge.
With Barca superstars Messi, Iniesta, Luis Suarez, Gerard Pique and Philippe Coutinho just some of those set to grace the field in Johannesburg next week, Motsepe feels it can be life-changing for young South Africans to see these juggernauts of the game perform in person. Barcelona defeated the Mamelodi Sundown 2-1 the last time they visited South Africa. The UN will also hold a sitting in honour of the late South African President.
Kick off between Sundowns and Barcelona at the FNB Stadium will be at 18:15pm. "Somehow it got into the public domain and there have been so many enquiries", Motsepe said on local radio as he confirmed the news.
This was unveiled by Jeff Radebe, the chairperson of the inter-ministerial committee on the centenary of Nelson Mandela, here on Thursday.
It has been reported that part of the agreement for the fixture is that Barca will bring along their star names, such as Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez, though with the World Cup in Russian Federation looming, it remains to be seen how much time they will spend on the pitch.
