"If you don't violate a unsafe deal, it doesn't make it less risky.' he said, adding that the accord was based on 'a fictitious Iranian report" to the International Atomic Energy Agency, in which Iran denied having ever planned to build a weapon".

"This wasn't just the turning down of the JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] as it had been inherited from Obama, but it was the turning down of a tougher JCPOA as had been negotiated with the Europeans over the past few months", said Dan Shapiro, who was the U.S. ambassador to Israel from 2011 to 2017.

"Air defences confronted tens of Israeli rockets and some of them reached their target and destroyed one of the radar sites", Syrian state news agency SANA reported, citing a military source.

Israel has repeatedly accused its arch enemy Iran of increasing its presence in neighbouring Syria, where Tehran backs the regime of President Bashar al-Assad in the seven-year-old civil war.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for talks, after expressing his "deep concern" over US President Donald Trump's withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal.

"The meetings between us are always important and this one is especially so", Netanyahu said before departing.

It apparently attempted to exact that revenge at 12:10 a.m. on Thursday, with its bombardment on Israeli military bases on the Golan Heights.

Assad's regime has also charged Netanyahu's government with carrying out strikes in the country.

"But I can say that in terms of our objective, we focused less on personnel and more on capabilities and hardware.to inflict long-term damage on the Iranian military establishment in Syria". Russian Federation also considers Iran a strategic ally.

Last month, an air strike on the T-4 air base near Syria's Homs city killed seven Iranians.

The Israelis fear that Iran and its Lebanese ally Hezbollah are turning Syria into a new front against them.

A barrage of rockets was sacked into Israel's Golan Heights on Wednesday evening, according to the Israeli Defense Force which says that Quds force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard is behind the attack.

Israel has ordered bomb shelters prepared on the Golan Heights and the government is bracing for an Iranian response to the latest attack on Iran's forces in Syria. Such strikes have become more frequent recently.

According to the SOHR, the attack killed at least nine Iranians, possibly IRGC troops or militiamen loyal to Iran.

United Nations Security Council Resolutions have demanded the return of the Golan Heights to Syria, but Israeli leaders have made it clear they have no intention of conceding the strategic position to Syria. USA officials said the strike, which killed two dozen troops, indicated that the outbreak of war between Iran and Israel was "at the top of the list" of potential hostilities around the world.
