"When a man finds the woman of his dreams and wants to say that he loves her and for the world to know", Cena said before calling up his then-fiancee.

The couple of six years confirmed their split with a statement shared to social media on Sunday, saying, "While this decision was a hard one, we continue to have a great deal of love and respect for one another".

Looking back, it seems Cena shared a few cryptic posts on social media before Bella announced the split, one of which was an Instagram image of a heart pieced together out of shattered glass. "Love is handsome, but we've had to come to the realization after being together for five years that love is not easy", he said.

"It's not what you go through that defines you; you can't help that", the quote read.

Cena, who staged a very public proposal to Bella during Wrestlemania 33 last April, took a more cagey approach to sharing the breakup news.

The professional wrestlers' wedding was set for next month in Mexico, where Bella was excited to celebrate her heritage with family and friends.

'While this decision was a hard one, we continue to have a great deal of love and respect for one another. "We ask that you respect our privacy during this time in our lives", it added. It was on these shows, as heightened (or un-real, even) as they were, that we learned of Nikki's desire to get married and have kids while John was extremely guarded, cautious and unwilling to compromise on certain aspects of his tightly-regulated life.

Bella was apparently hurt by Cena's comments about their relationship while he was promoting the "Blockers" movie. "I feel like there's a time bomb over my head".

"He was making it abundantly clear that he was going into this gritting his teeth the whole way". Cena admitted, "I think in relationships you have highs and lows and that was an extreme low". "I can't give you that".

It's no secret that John Cena has always been anti marriage and kids.
