Binghamton University in NY canceled classes today after a second student murder in five weeks.

An "Active Alert" was issued overnight for a reported stabbing on Binghamton University's campus, according to the college's website.

A student was found stabbed to death at Binghamton University on Sunday night.

"If there is information that relates to the immediate welfare of students and the campus community, we will communicate it via our alert system", Binghamton University said in a news release.

According to university officials, the suspect fled Windham Hall, a university dorm, after the 10:30 p.m. stabbing.

The incident "does not appear to be a random act", officials said.

Investigators from multiple agencies have been interviewing numerous people throughout the night. He's described as a "light-skinned male wearing dark trousers and dark hoodie".

Campus police and New York State Police have been on campus, searching the area near the on-campus housing building Windham Hall.

I have been in touch with BU's student government to offer our condolences as well as any support they might need.

Binghamton student Orlando Tercero, 22, who was also studying to be a nurse, was arrested four days later in Nicaragua and charged with her murder.
