I do know, however, that systems follow invention and while I know little about Facebook, it would not have survived and thrived if it were not in a perpetual state of refinement and expansion.

Against this backdrop, Ms McEvoy says that many companies in Silicon Valley are hiring ethical consultants.

However, critics have expressed skepticism.

Facebook, along with Google, Apple and Microsoft, is a tech behemoth whose operations touch nearly every aspect of our daily lives.

"The whole fantasy that people care about privacy or they're desperate to get out of ad-supported networks is ridiculous", said Clay Shirky, a researcher on the social and economic effects of internet technologies at New York University.

Problems like the one at Facebook are far from new, according to Seth Hardy, director of security research at Appthority, a mobile security firm based in San Francisco.

Brands can obtain your information in many different ways.

Kogan's app was downloaded by about 270,000 people who, in doing so, consented to give him access to information such as content they have liked as well as limited information about friends.

"Mobile devices really are general goal computers", said Mr Hardy.

Facebook also kept a history of each time I opened Facebook over the last two years, including which device and web browser I used. Some brands sounded obscure and sketchy - one was called "Microphone Check", which turned out to be a radio show.

You might wonder if anyone would share all that information.

Simply put, the majority of social media users either don't really understand - or don't care - how their information is collected and used, said Ryan Detert, chief executive of Influential, a Los Angeles start-up that uses artificial intelligence to match advertisers with social media influencers. It is also possible for attackers to use stored data, he adds.

"As Facebook has grown into a global colossus that connects about a third of the globe, Zuckerberg has subsequently assumed a reputation as an aloof megalomaniac deeply out of touch with the people who use his product", he wrote for Vanity Fair in January. This effectively prevents any website from loading any third-party scripts, including targeted advertising, without consent.

Harrington also said word of mouth, even if it drives someone to the Facebook page to learn about events, is the best way to get someone to come to a business.

"If, for example, a Swiss Facebook user spreads illegal propaganda through the network, that may be punishable in Switzerland, but not so in the U.S. due to a different legal framework", she told the SonntagsZeitung.

But not all tech industry professionals expect to see rapid change.

And researchers remain unconvinced that many people would opt to pay simply for their privacy, even as they pay lip service to it.

"I don't see a reason for businesses to pull back now". This was a breach of trust, and I'm sorry we didn't do more at the time. My hope is that people will reflect on this and say, 'Whoa!
