Blue Pinwheels are popping up across Lafayette on Friday. "In particular, we should join together-at the community level-to reach out and touch families who are struggling and do all that we can to support them so they can support their children", B.J. Walker, acting director of the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, said in a news release.

In exchange for her plea on Thursday, the county attorney's office dismissed a second negligent child abuse charge.

The officer said Beister acknowledged she'd lost her temper with her children.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least one in four children have experienced some form of child abuse or neglect in their lifetime. "We are committed to go after offenders to get maximum jail term behind bars", he said.

"It's important that people know that (child abuse) does happen", Piazza said. She said getting people to talk about abuse is the first step to prevention. "Every child deserves the support of caring, consistent, trained adult to help them find a safe, loving home where they can heal and thrive". Events this month are set to bring light to child abuse in the community.

"There's something about when you become a parent, these statistics start to hit you a bit more", Hunter said.

Throughout the month of April, Compass Center for Families is calling on members of the community to help the program serve more of Sheridan's most vulnerable children. In fact, child abuse and neglect have been declared a national emergency as a complex and growing problem in our nation. And sometimes we don't see them in law enforcement until they are well up to 16 or 17 years old.

Prevention tools include being aware of signs of abuse, reporting abuse and ensuring parents have the resources available to care for their children.
