Wolves clinch promotion to Premier League after Fulham falter

The Midlands club ended their six-year exile from the top flight without playing when close rivals Fulham could only draw 1-1 with Brentford, who equalised in the 94th minute.

It was Neves' sixth goal of the season, having also bagged the victor in their 1-0 win away to promotion rivals Cardiff last weekend - and means that should they secure a point at home to local rivals Birmingham City on Sunday - Wolves will be the first side promoted to the Premier League for the 2018/19 season.

For a while yesterday it looked as if Wolves would have to wait until today, when they play Birmingham City, to go up when Fulham took a 70th-minute lead against Brentford through Aleksander Mitrovic.

Sitting 12 points clear before the start of Saturday's Championship fixtures, Wolves were waiting on the outcome at Craven Cottage after Cardiff City had moved into second earlier in the day by winning at Norwich City.

The good times are returning at the Molineux, as Wolves sit one point away from a Premier League return following a 2-0 win at home to Derby last night.

Portugal worldwide Ruben Neves, signed for a Championship record £15.8 million from FC Porto in July, was one of a number of Portuguese players recruited in the summer and that investment has told on the field as the Midlands side have streaked away from the chasing pack.

Millwall extended their 17-game unbeaten league run with a 1-1 draw at Sheffield United to remain in the final playoff place.
