National awards are out, Sridevi wins best actress for 'Mom'

The Conclusion snagged three awards at the 65 National Awards: Best Popular Film, Best Action-Director and Best Special Effects.

Jayaraj was named best director and the best adapted screenplay writer for his Malayalam film "Bhayanakam", which also won the best cinematography award, announced jury chairperson Shekhar Kapur.

Amit Masurkar's Newton won the Best Hindi Film honour, while actor Pankaj Tripathi won a Special Mention for his performance in the film, which revolves around a young government clerk who is sent for election duty to a Maoist-controlled region.

Tulu film industry, popularly known as "Coastalwood", also gained the attention at the National level and gained the best regional award for Paddayi, directed by Abhaya Simha. "They have also worked hard for 10-12 years, they too have a career". Set in her own village, Chhaygaon, near Guwahati, Village Rockstars is the story of "poor but wonderful children" who live a fun-filled life. "It's a very special moment for all of us", they said in a statement.

"'Bandit Queen" was the last film I made in India, after that I never made a film in India for a reason. "She was not just a super actor but a super wife and a super mom", the statement read according to The Quint. She is not with us today but her legacy lives on.

However, when it came to content, regional films scored big. There are new filmmakers who are doing so well, someone like Sankalp (Reddy) was making a short film but then we made a feature film out of that. The National Film Awards would be presented by Hon'ble President of India on May 3, 2018. I was always fascinated by his nuanced performances - he would just drop starry gestures to become the character.

Rima Das' Assamese film Village Rockstars, about the music aspirations of a village girl, was named the best feature film, besides scoring awards for the best location sound recordist, editing and best child artiste (Bhanita Das).
