For starters, what we know is this: Randall seems to be telling his daughter that it's "time" that the two parties go and see someone. The celebration brings out a lot of memories for everyone involved. Maybe Deja didn't do it, but something bad could have happened to Beth and so Randall and Tess are scared to go see her in whatever condition she's in.
Two emotional toasts and several nail-biting moments later, This Is Us fans can finally start throwing some rice in the air; Kate and Toby are officially married. This should promise a lighter and brighter future for her, as she fully commits herself to the new love of her life, the man her father said would be better than him.
The morning of the wedding, Kate announces that she has a new plan and leaves for an errand that no one can go on but her. He's on a flight headed to Vietnam with an old photograph of Jack and his brother, Nicky, in Army fatigues during the Vietnam War (the same photo we saw in the episode, "Brothers").
If the theories are right, and it's a big if, then those flashes of never-to-be future Jack are an indication that Rebecca is sick, potentially dying.
In a weird "what if" moment, This Is Us explores the 40th wedding anniversary of Jack and Rebecca, had he not died after the fire. "She'll be thinking of him and having him in spirit". When she tells Rebecca about the dream, as she's on her mission for her "something old", Rebecca asks what Toby is doing in the dreams. Maybe she committed a awful crime that they haven't been able to come to grips with. Toby has often had to be the strong and supportive one. "We'll see some of that moving forward". They fear he will get severely depressed again, like he did after his first marriage to Josie failed. Looks like the Pearsons are going to be dealing with her abandonment issues heading into the next season. If something bad had happened to her, there's no way he'd be composed enough to go sit at Tess' desk at work. This was a hugely symbolic moment for Kate, as she has carried the weight and guilt of his passing for far too long. They do eventually find her at the tree stump after she's spread Jack's ashes.
"The Wedding" also has Kate finally reconcile with Rebecca. Both are very profound speeches. Deja has understandably been acting out after her mother abandoned her at the Pearson household.
"I can't tell you who the "her" is, but we'll be definitely following up on it in season three", Berger said. Could it be that Beth will someday perish of the same cancer that took her father?
Series creator Dan Fogelman has played with time on the show from the get-go, but the foreshadowing regarding the future has nearly felt like a "Lost"-like wrinkle, bringing additional dimension to the characters and what's happening in the present".
What Does the Future Hold?
Kevin is now dating Beth's cousin Zoe and they are seen on a plane to Vietnam.
And in 10 years, we see Randall with Tess. But rather than rail against her mother, she now sees her as inspiration, someone to hopefully become in her own way. In fact, he was so good in it, Howard told him to "buy a tux". My guess is they are talking about Deja.
While Randall, Beth, Tess and Annie enjoy the brief respite from the uncertainty that's about to come to their family and after wondering where Deja has run off to, we see Deja taking a baseball bat and smashing Randall's auto. "We like to keep one constant, so chances are that season three for our present-day Big Three will pick up in the Fall of their 38th year".
This post contains spoilers for the This Is Us Season 2 finale.
Kate and Toby successfully make it down the aisle despite all of the drama swirling around them. Could Toby's recurring depression be related to his parents? If someone Randall and Tess care for end up behind bars, they could feel somewhat responsible and that could be weighing on them.
The This Is Us season 2 finale is looking like it's going to be another source of waterworks for fans. "I don't know if the show always lives there, but I think understanding that we do exist in the past, it makes sense that we'd exist in the future as well".
