Now, the Eagles are going to sign former Broncos linebacker Corey Nelson to a one-year deal on Wednesday, a league source confirmed to NBC Sports Philadelphia. He hauled in 83 receptions for 949 yards a year ago, both of which are his lowest marks since 2011-12, but he remained a focal point of the Denver offense in a season where the quarterback play struggled, rotating between Trevor Siemian, Paxton Lynch and Brock Osweiler.

Nelson reportedly wanted a bigger role, which he may get in Philadelphia. With Beau Allenset to become a free agent, the Super Bowl champion Eagles were in the market for depth at defensive tackle.Joe Douglas, the Eagles'vice president of player personnel, is familiar with Ngata from their time together with the Baltimore Ravens.

Ngata's started 32 games over his three seasons in Detroit. Nelson suffered a tear near his elbow during a practice and was placed on injured reserve in late October. Allen, who specialized in stopping the run, played 41 percent of the defensive snaps in 2017 as part of an Eagles line rotation that included Fletcher Cox, Tim Jernigan and Destiny Vaeao. On defense he was a backup on paper, but a starter in the eyes of coaches. "He's our third inside linebacker - our starting dime player in sub (packages)", coach Vance Joseph said past year prior to Nelson's injury. On most teams, Corey would be a starter. The Eagles might be losing Najee Goode, and it is possible they are bringing in Nelson to replace Goode on special teams.

During his time in Detroit, Ngata managed six sacks and 53 total tackles. If he had to play for us, I would have no problem with Corey being a starter for us.
