Smart out indefinitely with torn thumb tendon

That appears to be confirmed by this latest update, as the Celtics organization doesn't believe Irving's injury is anything overly serious.

Marcus Smart has suffered a torn tendon in his right thumb and he is out indefinitely. He will, however, seek a second opinion on the diagnosis.

"(It's) sore, but it will be alright", Smart said Sunday night after the game, sporting a black soft brace on his thumb after the injury.

The Celtics are confident that Irving's knee soreness is merely tendinitis and that he likely won't miss significant time, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports. Smart scored 20 points with eight assists, seven rebounds and four steals against the Pacers on Sunday (Monday, PHL time).

The Celtics also lost backup center Daniel Theis to season-ending surgery to fix a torn meniscus. Smart is averaging 10.2 points per game for the Celtics, and he is their best on-ball perimeter defender.

Boston, having already clinched a playoff berth, can use the remainder of the regular season to get healthy.
