Maryam Nawaz Sharif - daughter of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif - said that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) stands united as Shahbaz Sharif was elected interim chief and Nawaz Sharif was named the leader of the party for life.

The meeting was attended by former premier Nawaz Sharif, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and other senior leaders of the ruling party.

Nawaz Sharif remained the party chief until the Supreme Court declared him ineligible to head his party.

The apex court's verdict was in response to 17 petitions challenging the controversial Elections Act 2017, which had been bulldozed through parliament previous year to pave the way for Nawaz Sharif's return to the PML-N's helm as party president.

"Nawaz proposed Shahbaz's name for the party's interim president and all more than 100 CWC members approved his name unanimously".

The CWC meeting, to be chaired by PML-N Chairman Raja Zafar-ul-Haq, will be held at 11am at the Model Town secretariat of the party.

Then the party's general council is required to elect a president within 45 days.

The petitioner also asked the ECP to bar Sharif from taking part in any meetings of the PML-N. The party nominated Sharif's younger brother Shahbaz Sharif for the post of acting President of the party.

"So, the party is going ahead with its main candidate for party presidency even for the acting president slot", a source said.

On Feb 21, a three-member bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar gave this verdict on a number of petitions challenging the controversial amendment to the Election Act 20117, which allowed Sharif to head his party.

He has said the top court had no business making the decision to oust him from the party position.

Keeping this technical issue in mind, the PML-N's information secretary said that only those CWC members who were elected before the July 28 decision had been called for Tuesday's meeting. "Under the current circumstances, the PML-N can not remain enrolled with the ECP", the petition read further. The applicants also prayed to the court to stop Nawaz Sharif from presiding over PML-N meetings in the wake of his disqualification.
