"I take a lot of great memories with me".

Lindsey Vonn knew that the bronze medal she earned Wednesday came in her final Olympic downhill, the signature event of her singular career.

Still, Shiffrin added the combined silver to her giant slalom gold from a week earlier, giving her two medals - plus a surprisingly low fourth-place finish in the slalom - in three races.

Her sportswomanship is admirable - and so is her self awareness. Her bronze from Wednesday's downhill will "99.9 percent" be her final Olympic medal. Hate to see her go out without a medal, ' wrote one. After strong winds delayed the start of the women's Alpine competitions, she finally made her PyeongChang debut on February 14 in the giant slalom.

"As much as I had very little chance of getting on the podium today, I still had a chance", Vonn told theChicago Tribune. She even wears his initials on the side of her helmet.

"Whether they win or lose, I cry for the winners (and) I cry for the losers because I know what it takes to make it", she said. "I think mostly it was intense because I wanted to win for my grandpa".

"I knew I had a competitive time, but I didn't know if it would be enough for gold", Goggia said.

She pushed through pain. She also told the Associated Press that she credits these physical trials with toughening her up.

"I wouldn't say they ignore each other", Shaw said.

She's a team player. "I'm proud to have given it my all". I put my boots on and I was really with my center. "There's not many people who do all of those really well". First Medvedeva broke the record she'd set the week before during the team competition, then Zagitova broke that record. Vonn thrashed through the next three gates, trying to straighten out, but the momentum was lost and she skied into second place, four tenths behind Goggia. Thus, the intersections between her career and Shiffrin's have been limited.

When she competes in the upcoming Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, Vonn said she'll be representing the "people of the United States, not the president".

She listens to her body. It was later confirmed the skier had suffered tears to the medial collateral and anterior cruciate ligaments in her right knee as well as a fractured tibial plateau. "I gave it my best shot". It's sad! This is my last downhill.

Going last and wearing her neon-colored shin guards, Vonn made a mistake that ended her day.

"I'm not going to quit until I get that record, that's for sure, no matter how much pain I'm in", said the American, now five victories short on 81. I love what I do. She won Olympic gold in the giant slalom a week ago and captured the slalom title at the 2014 Sochi Games. "Also, coming away with two medals knowing that I could have come away with nothing is just incredible", commented Shiffrin, current overall World Cup leader. "I'm proud to have given it my all".

So her rehab from this injury or that one, that became her life. Don't count her out at Pyeongchang just yet.

Next, the slalom. She had a 1.21-second lead on Shiffrin, who's one of the best in the world at the discipline. "I hope tomorrow I can maybe pull something out of the hat".
