Trump's Proposal to End Government Shutdown

She said the President would not "negotiate on the status of unlawful immigrants" while Democrats hold the "government and our military hostage".

Many hope the shutdown, which comes on the one-year anniversary of President Donald Trump's inauguration, will be short-lived.

Democrats have insisted they would back legislation reopening the government once there is a bipartisan agreement to preserve protections against deporting about 700,000 immigrants who arrived in the USA illegally as children. Senate Republican leader McConnell's commitment to quickly tackle the issue of immigrant "Dreamers" was contingent on Democrats providing enough votes now for a stopgap spending measure lasting a little less than three weeks.

"There's nothing in this bill that Democrats say they object to".

All but five Democrats voted to block the short-term bill that would have sustained federal funding at current levels, called a continuing resolution (CR).

Schumer contended that he offered Trump support for a wall at the Mexican border - a significant change for the Democrats - but said, "Negotiating with President Trump is like negotiating with Jell-O". "And the blame should crash entirely on President Trump's shoulders".

"President Trump will fix our border and keep our families safe", the ad concluded.

On that note, Trump had met with Schumer at the White House just hours ahead of the deadline for a government shutdown.

As the Senate majority leader, McConnell controls the Senate schedule.

"So some Democrats have to convince Mitch McConnell: stronger language results in an outcome", said Republican Senator Lindsey Graham.

Flake said negotiations would resume early on Monday leading up to the midday vote on the Senate floor. "Unfortunately, a Trump shutdown would be a ideal encapsulation of the chaos he has unleashed on our government".

Numerous immediate effects of the government shutdown will be muted for most Americans.

The weekend only showed small signs of a shutdown, but as the working week begins, hundreds of thousands of federal employees will be furloughed, meaning they will be put on temporary unpaid leave.

Social Security and most other safety-net programs are unaffected by the lapse in federal spending authority.

Essential federal services and the military were operational Monday, but even active-duty troops will not be paid until a deal is formally sealed.

It also said it would not discuss immigration until the government was up and running again.

Some national parks have been closed, as well as agencies deemed non-essential. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., also voted against the proposal, as did some Republicans, including Sen.
