Chevrolet unveiled its much-hyped 2019 Silverado pickup truck Saturday night at Eastern Market, kicking off a trio of truck reveals expected at the Detroit auto show. On an annual basis, Ford's F-Series sold almost 900,000 units in 2017, compared to about 586,000 units of the Chevy Silverado from GM. The new look is more truck-like than today's and features several variants within the 8 trim levels, including high-end material finishes.
"After selling 85 million trucks over 100 years, I would say we have learned a lot about what truck buyers want and what they truly need", said Alan Batey, president of GM's North American operations. One in every seven vehicles sold previous year was a full-size pickup. And despite a wheelbase up to 3.9-inches longer on some models, when you compare the old Crew Cab shortbox to the new 2019 Crew Cab shortbox, the new model is 450 pounds lighter. The new Silverado, which goes on sale this fall, slims down by using GM's expertise in melding different metals.
GM has used the steel bed in marketing, claiming that it's more durable than rival Ford's bed made of aluminum. The fully boxed steel frame is also 88 pounds lighter than its predecessor, while eighty percent of the frame is made of high-strength steel. Aluminum parts in the suspension and other areas make up the rest of the weight loss. In fact, Chevy says the interior will be the roomiest of all full-size trucks.
Designers and engineers paid particular attention to aerodynamics for better fuel economy, GM said.
Full powertrain details have not been announced, but the Silverado will be available with a 3.0-liter diesel engine and 10-speed automatic transmission combo that Reuss expects to outperform the upcoming F-150 diesel. The sides of a mean-looking front grille direct air around the front wheel wells to reduce wind drag, and there's a spoiler at the back of the cab roof to steer air over the bed. Despite this, the truck's weight has been cut by up to 450 pounds (204 kg) due to the use of lightweight materials such as aluminum. For reference, the Ram's 3.0 liter EcoDiesel engine delivers just 10 HP and 20 lb-ft less than Ford's diesel equivalent.
The 2019 Silverado will be available with a power operating rear tailgate that can open and close with the push of a button on the vehicle's key fob.
Five other engine/transmission combinations will be offered, including new 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8s that with cylinder deactivation systems that can shut the fuel flow to anywhere from one to seven of the cylinders as needed, in order to optimize power or efficiency. Cutouts in the bumper that let drivers step into the bed are larger to accommodate steel-toe boots.
