In reply to derogatory remarks Mr. Bannon made about Trump family members, the president contended that Mr. Bannon's role in his campaign and first months of his administration were overblown. He'll create some new organization, or be named the head of some PAC or third-party group, but without his influence over Trump and his platform at Breitbart, he is completely defanged.

The news comes two days after Bannon stepped down from Breitbart, the far-right website he returned to over the summer as executive chairman after being ousted from the White House.

Bannon in recent weeks has had a falling out with Trump. But if he was damaged by the electoral defeat of his preferred candidate, Roy Moore, in Alabama, his fall from grace was cemented by Fire and Fury.

"I think Bannon is probably frantically trying to create some kind of plan that allows him to save a little face", Kurt Bardella, a former spokesperson for Breitbart, told Business Insider in an email.

When Bannon made a decision to turn on Trump last week, Drudge fired back with a tweet calling the former Trump-whisperer "schizophrenic".

Bannon's departure from Breitbart came as a shock to some of his allies.

Despite the setback, Bannon has told confidants that he believes Trump, after a cooling-off period, will again seek his counsel, noting that the president often maintains contact with aides he has fired. In fact, as Bannon began to wield more power in the White House, Drudge seemed to push his readers away from Bannon.
