Last week another attorney working for Trump personally, Charles Harder, sent a cease and desist letter to the publisher and author of the new book "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House", seeking to stop further distribution.
Matt Mittenthal, a spokesman for BuzzFeed News, responded to the suit in a statement: "The dossier is, and continues to be, the subject of active investigations by Congress and intelligence agencies".
The longtime personal lawyer for President Donald Trump has filed a defamation lawsuit against BuzzFeed for publishing an unverified dossier of allegations about Trump's presidential campaign and Russian Federation.
Cohen's complaint against Buzzfeed names Editor in Chief Ben Smith, reporter Ken Bensinger and editors Miriam Elder and Mark Schoofs, who were the bylines on the article Buzzfeed published accompanying the dossier.
"A year of government inquiries and blockbuster journalism has made clear that the dossier is unquestionably real news", said Smith. It was presented to two successive presidents, and has been described in detail by news outlets around the world. BuzzFeed later redacted its online version of the dossier to exclude those named and issued an apology shortly after the lawsuit was filed.
Mr. Steele also reported, in pages submitted just 11 days after a Russian lawyer handed Mr. Trump's aides what had been promised to be negative information on Hillary Clinton in Trump Tower, that "the Kremlin had been feeding Trump and his team valuable intelligence on his opponents, including Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton". "Media outlets don't have a hall pass to disseminate and publish sexy stories to garner publicity at the expense of trashing the reparation of Trump campers", he said.
Cohen is also reportedly suing Fusion GPS - the intelligence firm that commissioned the research into the alleged ties between Trump and Russian Federation - and its cofounder, Glenn Simpson. "I have never been to Prague or the Czech Republic, and I have never engaged with, been paid by, paid for, or communicated with anyone representing the Russian Federation or anyone else to hack anyone or any organization or disseminate false news reports or interfere in any way with this election".

In his op-ed, Smith asserted that the dossier provided critical context for the American public to understand the actions of the various political players in the metastasizing investigation of Trump and his campaign's ties to Russian Federation.
