Vivo's on-display fingerprint scanner works great

This Vivo smartphone is the first one to have an in-screen fingerprint sensor.

The Sensor Company Synaptics, which has demoed the Vivo phone in a crowded booth, goes on to inform us that the fingerprint reader will not use a lot of battery. The company says the smartphone is ready for production and demonstrated how users will be able to unlock the device by placing the finger on the display. Phone makers have moved their fingerprint sensors to the side or back, or removed them entirely.

Back in December we heard that Synpatics in display fingerprint scanner had entered production and now Vivo has shown off a new smartphone with the technology at CES.

Apart from being cutting edge-technology, the biggest advantage of in-display scanner is it allows a phone to have an "all-screen" display and no awkwardly positioned sensors behind the phone.

Nonetheless, it's definitely exciting to finally see a smartphone with an in-screen fingerprint sensor become a reality.

Made in collaboration with Synaptics, the fingerprint sensor will only be "visible" when it is needed; a fingerprint icon will be shown on the display whenever the sensor is active. Then again, it seems likely that you could login another way and re-register your finger to make that stored print the new normal.

LAS VEGAS-Dear old fingerprint sensors, your days are numbered. It is located underneath the display but according to reports you can get a glimpse of it from the right angle when the display is off.

Even though the world's first smartphone with a (virtually) invisible fingerprint scanner might need a few more months before actually reaching store shelves around the world, its most important party trick is already comparable to many commercial solutions in terms of speed. "Based on ultrasonic technology, the fingerprint recognition technology can be further expanded to realize user interaction, such as gesture recognition, security verification and other fields, which will greatly enhance user experience". Many big-name technology companies, such as Samsung and Apple, have attempted to protect their consumers by offering various methods in order to lock your phone and ultimately keep your private information safe. Once you place it down, this icon will shine brighter to illuminate your finger bright enough for the sensor to see.
