CHP arrest 34 over New Year's weekend

Between Nov. 22 and January 2, Santa Rosa police made 74 DUI arrests, up from 64 in the same period previous year, said Santa Rosa Police Sgt. Summer Black.

DUI arrests and fatalities over the New Year's weekend were up this year, figures revealed.


During the duration of the holiday weekend, which saw increased DUI patrols, UHP stopped a total of 2,220 vehicles. One sustained minor injuries, and none were were intoxicated.

State police investigated 1,169 crashes over the three-day weekend, nearly double the number investigated during the same period a year ago, when troopers responded to 595 crashes. "In addition, CHP officers made more than 750 arrests for driving under the influence during the 78-hour holiday enforcement effort".


Citations were also issued in bulk during the enforcement period.

Statewide, there were 23 fatalities from 23 traffic collisions in CHP jurisdiction, and 17 people killed in traffic collisions in incorporated cities.


About 11 a.m. Friday, Applegate lost control of his 2003 Jeep while driving westbound on Highway 120 and crashed into a 2012 Chrysler Town and Country carrying five people in the eastbound lane, CHP reported.
