Donations can be made at red kettles or by visiting salmich.org, texting SALMICH to 41444, calling 877-SAL-MICH, or sending a check or money order, made payable to The Salvation Army, to 16130 Northland Dr., Southfield, MI 48075.
The campaign has a goal of $7.85 million this year.
Major Abe Tamayo said there could be some significant consequences if the organization doesn't meet its goal.
Jamie Brenchley, service manager for the Salvation Army homeless services on the Isle of Wight, said, "The winter shelter provides an emergency response to broken people on the Isle of Wight that are homeless".
"A lot of the really unbelievable things we got this morning were teen gifts, so gift cards, earbuds, iTunes, movie passes, sport equipment, everything we need for teens", said Patty Lou Bryant, communications coordinator for the non-profit.
The Salvation Army Christmas Present Appeal is a nationwide initiative where people donate to their local centre any new unwrapped toys and gifts for children, families, older people and people experiencing homelessness this Christmas.
There are a number of ways to give to the Salvation Army.
While he's not sure what's causing the shortfall, Acosta said it might be related to the fact that the agency hasn't been able to recruit enough bell-ringers to staff the 48 Fort Wayne area red-kettle locations. It also is accepting donations at donate.salvationarmyusa.org and in person at 2901 N. Clinton St.
