"More info to come as we get it", tweeted Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez. The officer, who was in uniform, managed to shoot the suspect, killing him.
The shooting was reported in the parking lot of a Walmart near the area of 32nd Avenue and Northwest 79th Street.
Detective Argemis Colome said Gonzalez suspected David Facen, 54, of Miami, had shoplifted from the store. "I'm right behind you.' Then the individual finally turned around and said to the officer, 'What, you want to talk to me?'" a witness said.
Authorities had closed down a section of Interstate 95 southbound so the officer could be taken to a nearby hospital. Police say he's in "great spirits".
Facen is described as a career criminal with prior arrests for attempted first-degree murder, second-degree murder and aggravated battery, records showed. He was released on November 28, 2016, after serving about 12 years of a 15-year sentence.
"Everybody knows his past by now, perhaps he shouldn't have been on the streets", Perez said.
"Miami Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department would like to extend our condolences to the families of the deceased".
Miami-Dade Police and Miami-Dade Corrections are taking a hard look at how drugs were smuggled into the county jail, resulting in the death of two inmates.
