Baker Mayfield named 2017 AP Player of the Year

Mayfield threw just five interceptions all year (and none after December 4) and shone brightest in the Sooners' biggest games, taking the drama out of the Heisman race with weeks to spare. Finally, he was suspended for a portion of the West Virginia game over Thanksgiving weekend after he was captured on television making an obscene gesture at the Kansas bench the week before.

Jackson, last year's Heisman victor, leads the nation in total offense at 411 yards per game.

So far in his redshirt senior season, Mayfield has completed 262 of 39 passes for a career-high 4,340 yards, 41 touchdowns and only five interceptions.

For a school that lacked much college football history until the past decade, Stanford has turned into a Heisman-contender factory. His 1,443 rushing yards ranked second among quarterbacks (11th among all players). Ohio State running back Archie Griffin became the first player to do so when he won the award in 1974 and '75. He did most of his work while gutting out a severely injured ankle, and had ten 100-yards games while averaging a remarkable 8.32 yards a carry. Quarterbacks Josh Huepel, Jason White and Sam Bradford are OU's other winners. I wouldn't be here without those guys and I'm happy I get to enjoy this trip with two of my teammates, even though I think all of them deserve to be here with us.

We may already know the outcome of Saturday's ceremony, but it's still worth looking back the remarkable seasons of the three finalists.

Mayfield becomes just the fifth player to finish in the top four in voting for the Heisman Trophy three straight years.

Eli Manning is tied with his brother, Peyton, with one Heisman finalist trip to NY and zero Heisman trophies.

"I'm honored to be chosen as a finalist with these two outstanding players", Jackson said in a statement this week.
