The confirmation has been expected for a while, after series creators the Duffer brothers told Vulture that they were working on concepts for a third and fourth season.
Netflix doesn't release its viewing numbers, but Nielsen managed to track some data, saying 15.8 million viewers watched the "Stranger Things" Season 2 premiere within three days of the October launch.
"Should we make another season of Stranger Things?" the subscription-only streaming giant teased with an interactive poll on Twitter before adding: "season 3 is officially happening!" And while the streaming service doesn't release audience statistics, Nielsen estimates that the first episode of season 2 drew around 15.8 million US viewers in the first three days of release. Netflix does not release information about viewership.
Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana in the 1980s, the first season focuses on the investigation into the disappearance of a young boy amid supernatural events occurring around the town including the appearance of a girl with psychokinetic abilities who helps the missing boy's friends in their own search.
The news comes just months after the genre-blending drama picked up five awards, out of 18 nominations, at the 2017 Emmy Awards.
Season 2 did lay a foundation for expanding Eleven's story in a significant way, and so it is reasonable to speculate that season 3 will take us down that road. "One question yet to be addressed is whether the show's breakout, 13-year-old Brown, will negotiate separately from the other young stars".
