A 14-year-old is in custody after allegedly bringing a loaded gun to school last week in Richmond.
- Parents received a letter Tuesday morning confirming a student was caught with a loaded gun at Rocky River High School. School officials said the caller identified the student by name. Thanks to the quick actions of that student, the doors at Shadle Park High School were locked and police were notified nearly immediately.
The school's principal sent a message to parents informing them of the incident.
"In this particular case, we applaud the student for doing the right thing at the right time, to get that student help, regardless of what their intention was a handgun out in the public with a student is not a safe thing", Morrison said.
"He had his backpack on his lap while a school administrator walked past and looked into the unzipped bag", Richmond police spokesman Lt. Felix Tan said. "The administrator saw the barrel of a gun and quickly snatched the backpack off of the student's lap and brought him to the principal's office". A juvenile petition will be filed with the Juvenile Court System, according to the district.
In an email, Pruitt-Adams stated that the boy "will be disciplined in accordance with our discipline code" but provided no further details, including whether the student would be allowed to return to school.
