Individuals and groups interested in volunteering as bell ringers at red kettles may contact for more information.

Maj. David Worthy, The Salvation Army of Knoxville's area commander, emphasized the importance of the campaign. Video by Chris Mertes.

Volunteers are asked to oversee a kettle at one of 19 locations across the city, for at least one two-hour shift. They brought food, and they brought toys and they brought candy. "Now, I can't walk by a kettle without putting money in".

The Salvation Army hopes more volunteers will sign up and help local families in a time of need the same way Roche was helped all those years ago.

As of November 23, kettles will be set up Foodland, Sobeys and Harbax Home Hardware in Glace Bay and beginning December 1, kettles will also be placed at Atlantic Superstore, the Glace Bay liquor store and the Sterling Mall.

"We're working on it at the moment so we don't have confirmed details just yet", Sadowy said.

"Christmas Kettles is our largest annual fundraiser and it directly supports Community and Family services, all of our programs and services that we have year round", Sadowy said. "This season, every cent helps us turn the hope of those we serve into reality". The programs include daily lunches and a seasonal men's shelter.

"We were more than pleased with the event", Shiflett said. It's 365 days a year. This year's goal is $670,000.

"My parents always wanted us to appreciate the sentiment that 'giving is better than receiving.' That's really become important in my life", Brantley said.
