Panthers lose WR Samuel to ankle surgery

According to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN, Samuel has ligament damage in his left ankle and is out for the rest of the season.

Just when Curtis Samuel's rookie season was starting to take off, it's been cut short.

Head coach Ron Rivera said things weren't very optimistic about Samuel's ankle before an MRI Tuesday afternoon.

The rookie wideout injured his left ankle in the third quarter of Carolina's 45-21 Week 10 win over the Miami Dolphins. He had only 10 catches for 70 yards before Monday night.

Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula said the team would use a committee approach to replace Samuel.

"It's kind of a collective effort", Shula said. He should be ready for the November 26 game against the New York Jets.

Now, with Samuel out for the season, the Panthers have to turn to others to inject that much-needed speed.

Samuel's was enjoying perhaps his best game as a pro prior to sustaining the injury.

As a junior at Ohio State in 2016, Samuel was used as the Buckeyes' H-Back.

McCaffrey, the former Stanford star, leads the team in receptions with 57 for 433 yards and three touchdowns. Carolina's offense has excelled since then, racking up a franchise record 548 yards and 30 first downs against Miami. "One of the best things that happened (Monday) night after Curtis (got injured) is we didn't really feel like we missed a beat". Guys came in and did their job, knew their assignments.
