Srinagar:An army man and a militant were killed in ongoing gunfight in Kulgam district of southern Kashmir on Tuesday.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Nowbug Kund village in Qazigund area of Kulgam this morning after receiving specific information about the presence of militants in the area, a police spokesman said. Security forces are battling militants in Pulwama, as well.

In Pulwama, militants fired at security forces including the Rashtriya Rifles, the Special Operations Group of the police and the Central Reserve Police Force in Laam village near Tral town.

The two militants had attacked a police party on Monday evening, according to The Hindu.

Authorities have suspended internet service in Baramulla district fearing it would mobilize crowds.

Reports of protests have come from Palhalan area of north Kashmir soon after a local militant was laid to rest. The gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
