On Friday, despite the video evidence proving the contrary, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders sidestepped questions about the validity of chief of staff John Kelly's claim that Wilson had bragged about securing funds for an Federal Bureau of Investigation field office in 2015.
Kelly, a retired threestar general whose son was killed while serving in Afghanistan, criticized Wilson during a dramatic White House appearance Thursday.
The White House is defending President Donald Trump's chief of staff after he mischaracterized previous remarks of a Democratic congresswoman who is now criticizing Trump's condolence call to the widow of a soldier killed in Niger. She's known him for more than 15 years.
He then detailed the painstaking process of bringing a fallen soldier home. "They have no credibility", she said.
The bodies are packed in ice, he said, placed in the plane and flown to Europe. And if there is a wife this is happening in two different places, if the parents are divorced, three different places.
Trump has said he reaches out to all families of those who died in military service, but some relatives of the fallen do not support his claim.
Kelly said that he recommended that Trump not make such calls. "A member of Congress who listened in on a phone call from the president of the United States to a young wife and in his way tried to express that opinion that he's a fearless man, a fallen hero".
Wilson said, "Basically, he (Trump) said, 'Well, I guess he knew what he signed up for, but I guess it still hurt.' That's what he said. It's nice to do, in my opinion, in any event". At this point, the president could say that an apple is often red and someone would find a way to twist it into something ugly.
"John Kelly's trying to keep his job", Wilson told Politico Thursday.
Sgt La David Johnson, 25, was a US Special Forces soldier killed in Niger.
Those calls, he said as he fought back tears, were the most important. Kelly recalled that Dunford told him his son "was doing exactly what he wanted to do when he was killed". The latest tested by the position he's been put in by the President is the by-all-accounts honorable chief of staff, retired four-star Marine Gen. John Kelly.
Referring to Wilson, the President added, "I'd like her to make the statement again because I did not say what she said".
Kelly, who has rarely discussed the 2010 death of his son in public, was taken by surprise when Trump hinted in an interview earlier in the week that President Barack Obama never called to offer Kelly condolences, according to two White House officials not authorized to discuss private conversations.
He was where he wanted to be, doing what he wanted to do. "He knew what the possibilities were because we're at war".
Mr Kelly added that Mr Dunford told him that "when he died, he was surrounded by the best men on this Earth, his friends".
She was then grilled on whether she had actually seen the speech. "And you can always find them, because they're in Arlington National Cemetery", he said. I said, I can tell you that President Obama, who was my commander-in-chief when I was on active duty, did not call my family.
Trump's broadside came a day after the White House defended chief of staff John Kelly after he mischaracterized Wilson's remarks and called her an "empty barrel" making noise.
"This shouldn't be about [Wilson]", said spokewoman Joyce Jones.
The Fake News is going insane with wacky Congresswoman Wilson (D), who was SECRETLY on a very personal call, and gave a total lie on content!
