Several NC prison employees injured, fires set in attempted prisoner escape

Multiple people were injured and schools were placed on lockdown after an attempted escape at the Pasquotank Correctional Institution.

Fires were set in the sewing plant at Pasquotank Correctional Institution in Elizabeth City, the state Department of Public Safety said Thursday afternoon.

Officials say that fires were set in the prison sewing plant, and that several employees are injured.

The extent of the injuries and whether any inmates had escaped from the facility, which is about 50 miles south of Norfolk, Virginia, were not immediately known. There was no immediate word on their conditions.

Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools told the station an elementary, middle and high school were placed on lockdown after an incident at a nearby jail, but the lockdown was later lifted.


Students who are bus riders who have not arrived home as of yet, will be returned to the school until we hear further from Emergency Management.

Buses on after school routes, with students on board, were ordered to turn back around and return to the schools, "due to the potential of inmates being in the area", the ECPPS said on its Facebook page.

After school events and athletics at Northside, ECMS and PCHS have been cancelled.
