A 30-year-old man was arrested after a police officer was fatally shot during a routine patrol in New Orleans early Friday.
The officer's name hasn't been released.
One officer was struck and collapsed at the scene, while one or two officers returned fire, striking the suspect, according to Harrison.
Chief Michael Harrison says the officer was one of four patrolling the area. "This hurts. I can't begin to tell you how much this hurts".
Landrieu added, "These are the worst kind of days for the city".
Paramedics took the officer to University Medical Center, and he died there, Harrison said.
A woman who identified herself only as Cassie, said she and her neighbors had to evacuate their nearby apartment building early Friday.
There is a large police presence at Cypress Parc Apartments near where the shooting happened. He said that's when a suspect fired shots, hitting the officer.
As of 3 a.m., the Interstate 10 East Service Road remained blocked near Cindy Place, with at least a dozen NOPD and state police vehicles lining the service road near the intersection. Eventually, the suspect surrendered peacefully and was transported to a local hospital.
